A recent study in the UK suggests that most travel agent websites suffer from a poor implementation of search engine optimization (SEO). In fact, only 12 percent demonstrated good use of SEO strategies, as concluded in part by Google search engine results for popular keyword searches.
A Charlottesville travel agent who is serious about ranking well on Google needs to learn from lessons in the UK and embrace the true power of SEO.
You may argue that popular keyword search results are not a good measure of the effectiveness for local travel agents and I agree; however, the study indicates that a majority of the sites reviewed have not properly chosen keywords and seem to focus by default on the generic, more broadly defined terms, such as “travel agency”, “online travel agency”, and “travel”. This is the equivalent of trying to compete with WalMart.
This problem is common among most business websites in general - folks assume that a pretty website is all that’s required to leverage the Internet. Simply building a website without SEO, might be compared to opening a new store in the middle of the desert. With no signs, direction, or traffic, there’s no demand and no one will ever find you.
My advice is to study up on SEO basics and make sure your site, as a Charlottesville travel agent, is targeting appropriate keywords and employing the most basic tactics to drive relevant traffic.
